It’s been an epic run, but after 155 years, Campbell Soup Company has announced its plans to drop “soup” from its name.

According to CNN, the beloved American manufacturer is rebranding as The Campbell’s Company as younger consumers ditch their signature, ready-to-serve soups in favor of snacks.

It’s a transition long in the making. In recent years, Campbell’s has purchased a number of popular snack brands like Goldfish, Snyder’s of Hanover, Cape Cod, and Pepperidge Farm. It famously acquired Sovos Brands, the company that makes Rao’s Homemade sauces as well as Noosa Yoghurt just last year.

“This subtle yet important change retains the company’s iconic name recognition, reputation, and equity built over 155 years while better reflecting the full breadth of the company’s portfolio,” Campbell's CEO Mark Clouse said in a statement.

Although soup remains an important part of Campbell’s business, it has come to represent a much smaller portion of its sales as market tastes have shifted. In 2023, Campbell’s snack sales reportedly grew 13%, while its soups grew by only 3%.

“What better way to mark this next chapter than with a subtle, but meaningful change in the name of our company,” Clouse said at a Monday shareholder meeting, per Today.com. “One that respects our heritage, but also reflects who we are today.”

“We will always love soup and will never take our eye off this critical business,” he added. “But today we are so much more than soup.”

Campbell’s new, soup-less name isn’t final yet. Shareholders are scheduled to vote to approve the new moniker in November.
