There is nothing quite like the irresistibly creamy flavor Velveeta cheese adds to any recipe. Whether you’re cooking up some Rotel Sausage Dip ahead of the big game or a big pot of Stovetop Macaroni and Cheese, Velveeta is a key ingredient and a big block goes a long way.

Can You Freeze Velveeta Cheese?

Technically yes, you can freeze Velveeta cheese. However, master chef Fred Tiess cautions that the consistency will change.

Because Velveeta is essentially milk, oil, and emulsifiers, freezing it – as opposed to freezing a higher protein cheese like Parmesan – increases the chance that it will no longer retain its emulsified consistency, notes Tiess.

Bottom line – yes you can freeze it, but whether you want to is up for debate.

What's The Best Way To Freeze Velveeta Cheese?

The best way to freeze it would be in airtight packaging, such as vacuum sealing.

If the Velveeta has been opened, Tiess says to consider preparations where the texture may not be as much of concern when thawed, such as a variation of Mac and Cheese for a casserole that can be frozen and baked when needed.

How Long Can You Keep Velveeta Cheese In The Refrigerator?

For up to two weeks in the refrigerator, if handled properly.

“The concern is the introduction of bacteria that can easily grow on this high moisture product,” Tiess cautions.
