Affectionately nicknamed “Hammond, America” by locals, Hammond, Louisiana is the largest town in Tangipahoa parish. (New Orleans is just 45 minutes down the road.) Southeastern Louisiana University is in the heart of the city, but it’s not your typical college town. This charming and diverse community is large enough to have fun but small enough to be comfortable, offering a wide variety of restaurants, shops and experiences and hardly any crowds. Rich in Southern hospitality and abundant with activities for all ages, Hammond is one of those places that will surprise you. Here are the best things to do on a long weekend in Hammond.

Start Your Day At Yellow Bird Cafe

If you love hearty home-cooked meals and cozy interiors, Yellow Bird Cafe is the place to go. This locally-owned restaurant serves classic American breakfast alongside flavorful Mexican dishes. Only here can you order shrimp and grits (which is already amazing on its own) and have it topped with chorizo. You have to be an early bird to eat here, as Yellow Bird is closed by 1 p.m, but it’s definitely worth setting your alarm. The service is sincere and the food will mend your soul.
